September Local Festivals and Events

The fall in the North Georgia Mountains is a great time for your family to enjoy many wonderful events. Not only are the leaves beginning to turn to beautiful shades of red, orange and yellow, but the weather is cooling off, which makes it perfect to enjoy the many festivals that are present in Blue Ridge and the surrounding areas. Featured in this month's newsletter, are the festivals we personally love to attend in the cities of Blue Ridge, Blairsville, Mineral Bluff and Helen.

Blue Ridge Community Theater, "Our Town"
August 29 - September 21, 2008, the classic play "Our Town" by Thornton Wilder is the story of life in a small, rural fictional town in New Hampshire called Grover's Corners. Our Town is one of the most popular plays of the 20th Century and Wilder was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for it. Directed by Tina Maslankowski. Kiwanis Fairgrounds, Blue Mountain Jam
September 2, 9, 16, 23rd, and 30th Located at Jones St & Austin St. Experience real mountain Blue Grass Music. Musicians are local players. Free admission all donations go to the efforts of the Kiwanis Club. Call before you come just to make sure. 706-258-2736 Sponsored by Blue Mountain Music & Treasures. 6:30 - 9:00 p.m.


Downtown Historic Blue Ridge, Farmers Market/Mountain Fresh Market
September 6, 13, 20 and 27th Local farmers set up with their crops for sale, farm fresh eggs, produce, and locally made products and crafts - so load up to make your mountain vacation meals something to remember. Every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.


Vogel State Park, Mountain Music Festival
September 13th The Mountain Music Festival is located in Blairsville. Enjoy Bluegrass and Appalachian mountain music. There are also beautiful crafts, demonstrations and good food to consume during this event.


Blue Ridge Kiwanis Fairgrounds, Poker Run for Open Arms
September 13. Enjoy the beautiful North Georgia Mountains while helping raise money for Open Arms of Blue Ridge. This event is graciously sponsored by The News Observer to benefit Open Arms. Open Arms will be a safe, secure, stable environment which will begin the healing process for children who have suffered abuse with the transition into a long-term arrangement with their own parents or family members or with foster parents. Cost of registration is $25.00, includes 1 Poker Hand, 1 Lunch and 1 T-shirt (to the first 100 who register) Winning hand wins 20 percent of pot.

Helen, GA, Oktoberfest
September 14 - November 2nd. The south's longest lasting Oktoberfest in Georgia's own Alpine village. This event features live entertainment, great German and Austrian food and drinks. Enjoy this scenic ride from Blue Ridge. For more information, call the Helen Chamber of Commerce, 706-878-2181


Historic Court House on the Square, Bluegrass Festival - Blairsville
September 19 and 20th Take 515 east to Blairsville. Free admission, Friday night 6:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m., Saturday 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Bluegrass jamming all around Historic Downtown Blairsville, music performances on two stages all day long. Don't forget to bring a chair or blanket for the outside stage. There will be an alternate site if it rains.


Downtown City Park, Blue Ridge, Wildlife Art Festival
September 20 and 21st. The 9th Annual Wildlife Arts Festival, showcases the works of the finest wildlife artists in the Southeast. You will see more than 75 artists displaying original works including sculpture, painting and woodworking. Sponsored by the Blue Ridge Mountain Arts Association 706-632-2144


Downtown City Park, Blue Ridge, Concert in the Park
September 20th . 6:00 p.m. Free concert in the town park. Bring your blanket or chairs and a picnic and come and enjoy the fun. These fine musicians with a long history in bluegrass music are playing some of the most distinctive music in the industry. A concert you don't want to miss! Mineral Bluff, Ride the Rails Festival
September 20 and 21st. Located right of Highway 60 at Spur 60, is the 4th Annual Ride the Rails festival. This is a five mile round trip by railroad motor car traveling through the Iron Bridge over the beautiful Toccoa River, then climbing the grade out of the valley to Murphy Junction and return. Food, Cotton Candy, Popcorn, Hot Fresh Coffee, Cold Soft Drinks, Model Train Sales, Tee Shirts, Motor Car Display Area and Local Vendors. A fun day for all! Visit the depot and see the progress being made on our large "HO" gauge model railroad based on the "Old Line" from Atlanta to Etoway, Tennessee and through Mineral Bluff to Murphy, North Carolina! National Fish Hatchery, Suches GA - Family Fishing Festival
September 27th Right off Highway 60 to Forest Service Road 69, is the Family Fishing Festival. It's fun for the whole family. 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. 16 and under can fish free. Bring your poles and bait and the hatchery provides the fish in Rock Creek. Bring the kids out to learn about environmental conservation, trout fishing as a sport, USDA, US Fish & Wildlife and much more. T-shirts, great food and enjoy a morning of great fun fishing.
